Say Aloha to Hawaii

So, You're Dreaming of a Hawaiian Vacation? Let’s Make It Happen!

Planning a Hawaiian vacation might sound like it should involve nothing but sipping mai tais and picking out the perfect beach hat - but there’s actually a bit more to it. The good news? With some thoughtful prep (and a little help from a travel advisor who's been there, done that, and got the souvenir mug), turning your dream trip into a reality is totally doable.

Here are nine key things to consider before you say “aloha” to paradise:

1. When’s the Best Time to Go?

First things first - what time of year are you thinking? Timing can totally shape your experience, especially if you’ve got your heart set on spotting whales, snorkeling with sea turtles, or surfing some sweet waves. Chatting with a travel advisor (like yours truly!) can help narrow it down based on what you want to see and do.

2. How Long Should You Stay?

Let’s be real: flying to Hawaii isn’t like hopping in your car and driving to the next town. From Houston, you're looking at a solid eight hours in the air - and even longer if you're coming from further east. Since flights can be pricey, you’ll want to soak up every minute once you get there. Give yourself time to adjust, especially if jet lag tends to hit you like a wave (pun intended).

3. One Island or Multiple? That is the Question.

This might be one of the trickiest decisions you’ll make: do you stick to one island and really get to know it, or island-hop like a tropical explorer?

  • One island = simpler logistics, fewer flights, more time to relax, and the ability to explore the island like a local.
  • Island hopping = more variety, different vibes, and bragging rights for covering more ground.

Both are awesome, but the best choice depends on your timeline, budget, and how much adventure you’re after.

4. Which Island Matches Your Vacation Vibe?

Here’s a quick rundown of the 4 most visited islands to get your imagination going:

  • Oahu: City meets surf. Think Honolulu, Waikiki, nightlife, shopping, and bustling beaches.
  • Maui: A bit of everything - beaches, volcanoes, rainforests, and a sprinkle of nightlife.
  • Big Island: Adventure central! From lava flows to stargazing, it’s the most diverse in climate and terrain.
  • Kauai: The “Garden Isle” - lush, green, and ideal for hiking, kayaking, ziplining, and unplugging from the world.

Not sure which one fits best? I can help!

5. What’s Your Budget Look Like?

Let's talk money - because, let’s face it, Hawaii is magical - but not exactly cheap. Between flights, lodging, food (yes, that poke bowl might cost more than you think), and excursions, it all adds up. That’s why setting a budget early can help guide your decisions - and I can help you stick to it without skimping on the good stuff.

6. Book Early, Stress Less

Hawaii is popular (shocking, I know), so flights and accommodations go fast - especially during peak seasons. Booking early not only gives you the best selection, but it also helps stretch your budget. Plus, if you end up with a little extra cash or time to save, you can upgrade those vacation dreams to a deluxe reality.

7. What Do You Want to Do There?

Want to luau under the stars? Snorkel with sea turtles? Helicopter over volcanoes? Many of Hawaii’s top experiences fill up quickly, so it pays to book early. The earlier we get your activities lined up, the better chance you have of doing everything on your bucket list (and sticking to your budget while doing it).

8. What Should You Pack?

Packing isn’t just about swimsuits and sunscreen (please pack reef-safe) - although those are a must. If you’re planning hikes, bike rides, or serious snorkeling, you might want to bring your own gear or clothes suited for adventure. I’ve got lots of tried-and-true packing tips to share from my own island escapades!

9. How Will You Get Around?

Spoiler alert: public transit isn’t exactly a thing in most parts of Hawaii. Renting a car is often the way to go, especially if you want to explore. Just remember to account for parking, gas, and luggage space when picking your ride. And yes, rideshares exist—but they’re pricier than what you might be used to back home.

Bonus: Why Work with a Travel Advisor (a.k.a. Me!)?

I’ve got the inside scoop, firsthand experience, and plenty of connections to make your vacation smooth, fun, and totally unforgettable. Whether you’re dreaming of romance, adventure, or just some good old-fashioned beach lounging, I’ll help you create a trip that hits all the right notes.

You’re engaged - congratulations! You’ve probably got a Pinterest board full of wedding ideas, a group chat buzzing with venue links, and a to-do list that keeps mysteriously growing overnight. Amid all of this, someone (maybe even you) says: “We should start planning the honeymoon.” And suddenly, you're 27 tabs deep into travel blogs, trying to figure out whether the Maldives is too far, whether Greece is too hot in July, or whether that “luxury beachfront resort” is actually luxurious - or just really good at photo editing. Take a deep breath. You're not alone, and you're in the right place. As a Travel Advisor who specializes in honeymoons, I'm here to help you cut through the chaos and design a trip that's as exciting and effortless as it should be. Here’s how to plan the perfect honeymoon – without the stress. 1. Start With the Feeling, Not the Destination Before you get stuck comparing flight prices and resort photos, ask yourselves: What kind of honeymoon do we actually want? Do you want to unplug and relax after months of wedding planning? Are you dreaming of adventure , with zip lines and volcano hikes? Do you crave culture and cuisine , wandering charming towns or eating your way through the countryside? Or maybe it’s a little of everything? Nailing down the vibe helps narrow your focus - and sets the tone for a trip that feels like you, not just a pretty location. 2. Set a Realistic Budget Your honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime trip and you want it to be the trip that all future vacations are compared against. Honeymoons come in all shapes, sizes, and price ranges - and you don’t need a Hollywood budget to have a magical experience, but you do need to be honest about your comfort zone. What you don’t want is to spend every penny you have just getting to the destination, then get stuck eating the local equivalent of $.99 pre-packaged ramen noodles the whole time. Sure, there are deals to be had, but there are no guarantees those deals are available at the destination, resort, or time you want. So, make sure your budget is realistic for your dreams and your destination – and make sure you know your must-haves vs your nice-to-haves in advance. 3. Stop Drowning in Research - Ask a Travel Advisor Here’s a secret: you don’t have to DIY everything. There’s a fine line between “informed” and “overwhelmed,” and if your honeymoon planning has started to feel like a second job (on top of wedding planning), it’s time to bring in a Travel Advisor. I do the heavy lifting - like finding the perfect accommodations, coordinating flights and transfers, and recommending unforgettable (but realistic) activities - so you can stay excited instead of exhausted. 4. Leave Room for Relaxing One of the biggest mistakes couples can make is overbooking their honeymoon. Yes, it’s tempting to squeeze in everything. But the perfect honeymoon includes space for spontaneity - sleeping in, a surprise beach picnic, or just doing absolutely nothing together. There should be a balance between experiencing and relaxing, so you return home refreshed and glowing – not needing a vacation from your vacation! 5. Protect the Investment Studies show that most couples spend a good bit more on their honeymoon than they do on other vacations, so it’s important to protect your investment. One of the best pieces of advice I offer to all my clients – is buy the travel insurance. On my honeymoon, the airline lost my luggage for 3 days. THREE DAYS! I had a small carry-on bag with my swimsuit and a change of clothes. I don’t remember the exact amount the airline paid me, but it was minimal – and barely covered the new bottles of sunscreen and souvenir shirts I had to buy (and wear to dinner, and the beach, and hiking, and everywhere in between!). If I had travel insurance back then, there would have been coverage for the lost luggage. And it covers a whole lot of other things as well and I highly recommend you buy it – just in case. Planning Your Honeymoon Should Be Fun - Let’s Make Sure It Stays That Way This isn’t just another vacation. It’s the celebration of the beginning of your life together. It should feel exciting, personal, and completely stress-free - and with the right planning (and the right Travel Advisor…hint hint), it absolutely can. If you're ready to stop scrolling and start dreaming, I’d love to help you plan a honeymoon that’s unforgettable for all the right reasons.
